STOP! Before you start taking gearboxes out, or buying another, first of all tell us what’s going on. We may be able to narrow it down a little. Problems could be in the box, or the range, in the lid, in the controller, in the air manifold, a poor solenoid, sticking valve, whatever.

On any given type of transmission we see the same thing occurring time and time again. Often we can advise the source of the problem because of past experience and things may not be as bad as you first think. So why is my gearbox crunching into gear?

The engaging teeth should look like the left picture, nice & sharp so they slide past each other. When gears are crunching, the teeth have worn away and are consequently banging together…….you don’t need a new box.

Simple, could be just the turret section. If we find faults that match the reported symptoms then it’s fix the turret and no need to touch the box and this can often reduce the cost by thousands.
So why is my gearbox dropping out of gear?

Another common fault, could be just worn sleeves and cones. They should lock together like a dove tail joint because, when worn, they don’t lock and hence the box drops out of gear. It’s a simple fix, we just fit new ones.

Synchro rings rub against the engaging cones, grip and slow the shaft. When worn down they have no grip. It’s a simple fix, we just reline the unit with a new set.
So why the noise in all gears?

Well, many answers, but a common fault is bearing collapse, due to wear, fatigue, or just getting to the end of expected working life. It is a simple fix, we just reline the unit with a new set………….You don’t need a new box.
Box stuck in 3rd gear?

The smallest of things can cause a major problem. We have lost count of the units that only had a broken roll pin or something just as trivial causing the problem. Some companies advise you need a whole gearbox! (Roll pins are about 8p each).
